Crimes against Humanity

Sean Gimenez

Are war crimes during the Iraq war being over look or less punished? Without stricter punishment will these crimes continue?

Personal Interest: War crimes have had a major affect on the war in Iraq, from Abu Ghraib to the men accused of raping and killing a women and her family. I have wanted take a closer look to what life was like for a member that is serving during one the most chaotic wars of our time.

Method: The methods of research that I used were the UW library card catalog, Google scholarly search and the database Proquest for all of the scholarly journals. I also used proquest for most of the articles that had just been printed that have had a major impact on my topic.

1. UW library

2. Google search engine

3. Proquest

Findings:

1.Military personnel during the Vietnam War were also let off with minimal punishment for crimes of war in certain cases.

2.Men that committed the crime would do this out in the open without regards to the law.

3.Many of the officer's consequence were minimal punishment.

4.Men that serve honorably get over look by the crimes that others commit.

5.Most of the officers were not aware of their troops behaviors.

Conclusion

Conclusion: I have found that war crimes when they go unpunished have a major effect on military personnel actions towards prisoners and civilians. Many of the troops actions were a result of aggression from the loss of a member from their platoon. Some of the officer's do not follow proper procedures; instead they try to keep their personnel out of trouble by not reporting crimes. When soldiers go unpunished they do not have to worry about the repercussions to their actions. War crimes become a part of war, helping break a person down in a way that the prisoners and civilians will do anything that you say.
